Your Orange plan shows 80 or 100 GB, but you have no idea how much you have left in the middle of the month. Before receiving a notification of reduced data, a few simple habits can help you keep control over your mobile internet usage. You just need to know where to look and understand what the displayed numbers really mean.
Phone counter or Orange counter: two different figures
Your smartphone (Android or iOS) has a data counter in its settings. This counter adds up all outgoing and incoming traffic, including Wi-Fi connections. It makes no distinction between what consumes your plan and what goes through your box.
The Orange counter, on the other hand, only measures data passing through the mobile network. This is the one that counts for your plan. If you compare the two, the phone’s figure will almost always be higher.
This difference is a frequent source of confusion. You might see 12 GB used in your iPhone settings while Orange only counts 7 on your plan. Only the Orange counter is valid for overages. If you want to check your Orange internet consumption accurately, you should always turn to the operator’s tools, not the phone’s settings.

Orange and Me App: mobile consumption tracking
The Orange and Me app (sometimes simply called “Orange app”) is the most direct way to check your consumption from your mobile. Once logged in, the Consumption Tracking section shows your remaining mobile internet allowance.
You can see the amount of data used during the current period, as well as the total volume included in your plan. The display updates regularly, although there may be a slight delay of a few hours.
What the app shows besides data
The consumption tracking is not limited to mobile internet. You can also find details of your calls, SMS, and any purchases billed to your line (Internet+ services, for example). It’s a complete dashboard of your mobile subscription.
- The volume of internet data consumed and the remaining percentage of your monthly allowance
- The details of calls and SMS sent, useful if your plan has limits on certain destinations
- Purchases and services billed via your mobile line (content, third-party subscriptions)
For professionals with an Orange Pro plan, the dedicated Orange Pro app offers the same tracking functions, plus notifications in case of overages.
Orange consumption tracking without an app: SMS and customer area
If you don’t want to install an app, or your phone lacks storage space, there are two other methods available.
The short code 555
By dialing 555 from your Orange mobile, you receive a summary SMS of your consumption. It’s the fastest method when you don’t have a data connection, as it works via the traditional phone network. The received SMS indicates your internet consumption, calls, and SMS for the current period.
The customer area on the web
From any mobile browser, go to the Orange website and log into your customer area. The Consumption Tracking section is accessible there in the same way as in the app. This option is convenient if you’re checking your consumption from another device.
The 555, the app, and the customer area display the same data. Just choose the channel that suits you best at the moment.

Mobile data consumption: interpreting the numbers to adjust your plan
Checking your consumption is one thing. Knowing what to do with it is more useful. Many subscribers pay for GB they never use, or on the contrary, experience reduced speeds at the end of the month due to insufficient allowance.
According to data published by ARCEP, the average mobile data consumption in France reaches about 18 GB per month per SIM card. This figure has significantly increased in recent years. If your consumption tracking regularly shows less than 10 GB used while your plan offers 100, you are probably paying more than necessary.
Look over several months, not just one
A single month is not representative. You may have spent three weeks on Wi-Fi at home, or conversely, traveled using 4G heavily. Recent comparisons recommend observing your consumption over three to six months to identify a reliable trend.
The Orange and Me app allows you to check your consumption history over previous periods. Compare several months before changing your plan.
- If you regularly exceed 80% of your allowance, consider a higher plan to avoid reduced speeds
- If you consistently stay below 30% usage, a lighter plan might suffice and reduce your bill
- If your consumption varies greatly from month to month (vacations, travel), a plan with flexible or rechargeable data may be suitable
Orange data slider: estimate your consumption before choosing
Orange offers a tool on its website called the data consumption slider. It allows you to estimate how many GB correspond to your usual usage: video streaming, web browsing, social media, video conferencing.
This tool complements the consumption tracking. The tracking tells you what you have consumed. The slider helps you understand why you consume so much. You indicate your daily usage, and the tool calculates a monthly estimate in GB.
It’s a good starting point if you’re hesitating between two plans or if you’re wondering why your allowance is depleting so quickly. An hour of HD video streaming consumes much more than an entire day of messaging and regular web browsing.
Tracking your mobile internet consumption with Orange relies on three channels (app, customer area, SMS to 555), all fed by the same operator counter. The most useful habit remains to check your consumption over several months rather than reacting to a single reading. It’s this habit that allows you to spot an oversized plan or, conversely, anticipate an overage before the speed is reduced.
